About Alaska Borough Property Records

Unlike most U.S. states, Alaska does not use traditional counties. The state is divided into organized boroughs, unorganized census areas, and municipalities. Property deed and lien recording for all areas runs through the Alaska Department of Natural Resources Recorder's Office, which manages 34 recording districts from two offices in Anchorage and Fairbanks. For assessed values and property tax records, organized boroughs maintain their own assessing departments with searchable online databases in many cases. Unorganized census areas rely on the state or incorporated cities for any local assessment functions.

Recording fees are set by state statute and apply equally to all boroughs and census areas. The fee is $20 for the first page and $5 for each additional page of the same document under Alaska Statutes Title 40, Chapter 17. For questions about which recording district covers a specific borough or census area, the DNR district list provides a complete reference with office contacts and addresses.
